Many people at the Ignatius House Jesuit Retreat Center in Atlanta and for that matter across the globe were impacted by Fr. Jack Vessels, S.J. On the morning of January 19, 2017, he was called home to heaven. For those who knew him and I don’t exaggerate when I say this, I considered him a living saint who went about his life as a contemplative in action, always helping, always enthusiastic!! He considered his work as a priest as pure joy. He was a rare treasure of which I, along with many others, were blessed to have our paths cross with him. On a retreat, he would not just relay what happened in a gospel reading but why and how it happened – always a teacher!! For today’s meditation, I will leave you with one of his favorite sayings when it came to prayer and meditation, he would say “just chew, just chew, like savoring the taste of a delicious meal, just chew.” He would do so with a hand motion of chewing. Basically, take the scripture and dig for the richness. He will certainly be missed in this life here on earth.
