Daily Meditation – The Meaning of Love

In A Way to Love, Anthony de Mello states that to love “means to see a person, a thing, a situation, as it really is and not as you imagine it to be, and to give it the response it deserves. You cannot love what you do not even see. … And what prevents you from seeing? Your concepts, your categories, your prejudices and projections, your needs and attachments, the labels you have drawn from your conditioning and from past experiences. Seeing is the most arduous thing that a human being can undertake. For it calls for a disciplined, alert mind, whereas most people would much rather lapse into mental laziness than take the trouble to see each person and thing anew in present-moment freshness."

Daily Meditation – How I am loved by God (Prayer on my Dossier)

As part of the introduction to the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, we consider how we are loved by God.  To this objective, consider the following condensed meditation of Prayer on my Dossier.

Jot down in a notebook or just consider in your mind the particulars of you coming into this world – the place, time, parents, etc. Next consider characteristics and qualities inherited from your parents or family such as habits, intelligence, confidence, anxiety.  Afterwards, consider your personal qualities, both those that you like and those you don’t (i.e. I’m positive, negative, energetic, sensitive, etc.).

As you note these qualities, acknowledge them as gifts from the One who makes us.  “For all this, God chose for me within the human family; for all this, I praise and thank God.”

When finished, recite Psalm 130 – “A song of ascents. Out of the depths I call to you, LORD; Lord, hear my cry! May your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, LORD, mark our sins, Lord, who can stand? But with you is forgiveness and so you are revered. I wait with longing for the LORD, my soul waits for his word. My soul looks for the Lord more than sentinels for daybreak. More than sentinels for daybreak, let Israel look for the LORD, For with the LORD is kindness, with him is full redemption, And God will redeem Israel from all their sins.”

Finally, remember that God did not finish making me once, long ago.  Rather, I remember that God continues to make me and has hopes for me. He desires that I keep growing in love until I love as completely as he does.
