Daily Meditation – Rummaging for God
In May 1994, America magazine published an article by Fr. Dennis Hamm, S.J, a Jesuit priest and theologian at Creighton University . The article was titled – Rummaging for God: Praying Backward Through Your Day. In the article, Fr. Hamm gives insight into the scripture “If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts” (Ps.95). He goes on to state that this scripture “implies that the divine voice must somehow be accessible in our daily experience, for we are creatures who live one day at a time.” How so? Well, he gives a visual of rummaging through drawer full of stuff to find something. It is through this image that he describes a process for finding God in the midst of a busy day. This process is based on the daily examination of consciousness. To do so, Fr. Hamm provides the following format:
1. Pray for light or illumination as to how the Spirit of God is leading us.
2. Review the day in thanksgiving with gratitude being our whole foundation with God.
3. Review the feelings that surface in the replay of the day.
4. Choose one of those feelings (positive or negative) and pray from it.
5. Look toward tomorrow.
He also gives a mnemonic for recalling the five points: LT3F (light, thanks, feelings, focus, future).
