Daily Meditation – The Lilies of the Field

Consider the lily in that it does not choose its field nor does it have control over what grows around it such as thorns or crabgrass. Alternatively, it may be outshone by beautiful flowers or other plants. The lily has no control over rain or drought, it simply must endure. The lily came up with unique characteristics such as a certain shape, color and size. Consider the correlation of the lily to your life. To what extent is my life world from my making; how much is from God? Consider the little control over what surrounds us daily. Finally, so for all that has shaped me for better or worse, all that has given me joy and pain – I am precious in God’s eyes and honored and loved.

“How much of me is mine; how much can be God’s?”

- Adapted from the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius – Prayer of Consideration: The Lilies of the Field
